Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Basal handles information when you use our website at thinkbasal.com and the Basal mobile apps for iOS and Android.

Last updated April 7, 2026

Overview

Basal is a self-reflection tool. We designed it to avoid traditional account-based tracking: there are no usernames, no passwords, and your session history is stored locally on your device.

We do still process limited information to operate the product, measure usage, support subscriptions, and generate AI-powered perspectives.

Information We Collect

Depending on how you use Basal, we may process:

  • Thoughts, optional feeling tags, session history, framework preferences, theme settings, and similar in-app content stored on your device.
  • A device-scoped UUID generated by the app and used as an anonymous identifier for credit tracking and subscription lookup.
  • Subscription and billing metadata, such as Stripe customer ID, subscription status, plan, and billing period dates.
  • Usage and analytics events, such as app screens, feature events, website page views, and download-button clicks, when analytics are enabled.
  • Technical information that our infrastructure and service providers receive in the ordinary course of providing the service, such as IP address, browser/device details, and request logs.

How We Use Information

  • Provide the website and mobile apps.
  • Generate perspectives and reframes for the thought text you submit.
  • Persist local history, settings, and framework preferences on your device.
  • Track free-credit usage, determine paid status, and manage subscriptions.
  • Understand product usage, diagnose issues, and improve the app and site.
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.

AI Processing

When you submit a thought for perspectives or a deeper reframe, the thought text and any related feeling metadata may be sent to our AI processing stack to generate the response. In production, Basal sends requests through our backend and may use third-party AI providers such as Anthropic to produce the output.

Do not submit information you are not comfortable sharing with those processors. AI output may be inaccurate and should be used for reflection only.

Service Providers and Sharing

We use service providers to operate Basal, including:

  • Anthropic for AI response generation.
  • AWS for backend hosting and request handling.
  • Turso/libSQL for server-side usage and subscription records.
  • Stripe for subscription billing and customer portal features.
  • PostHog for product analytics on mobile and web.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or asset sale.

Retention and Deletion

Local session content remains on your device until you delete it in the app or remove the app from your device. Basal does not currently sync personal session history to a Basal account because Basal does not use accounts.

We retain server-side usage, analytics, and subscription records only for as long as reasonably necessary to operate the service, support billing, prevent abuse, resolve disputes, and comply with law.

If you want us to delete server-side records tied to your device ID or subscription, email hello@thinkbasal.com. We may need information that helps us identify the relevant device or subscription record.

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards intended to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children

Basal is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact us and we will review the request.

Third-Party Links and Stores

Basal may link to third-party services such as Stripe, the Apple App Store, and Google Play. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date on this page. Your continued use of Basal after an updated policy becomes effective means the updated policy applies going forward.
