Stoicism distinguishes between a repeating pattern (which is observable) and a permanent condition (which is an interpretation layered on top). The feeling recurs; the permanence is a judgment the mind is making about what the recurrence means. Stoicism separates the event—Sunday nights, the feeling itself—from the story constructed around it. The recurrence is real and verifiable. But "permanent" is not a fact the person is observing; it's a conclusion being drawn. This distinction matters because the conclusion is actually within the person's control in a way the feeling itself may not be.

If this feeling is cycling predictably on Sunday nights, what specifically about Sunday (or Monday's approach) is within the person's direct control to alter—not the feeling itself, but the circumstance triggering it?

Somatic Therapy

From a somatic perspective, repetition is being registered not just as a thought pattern but as a body state—Sunday night arrives, and the nervous system recognizes the familiar signal and contracts. When a feeling repeats in the body this many times, it begins to feel like truth, like permanence, even if the actual circumstances have changed. Somatic therapy recognizes that the body doesn't experience time the way the mind does. When a particular state (dread, tension, heaviness) repeats in the same context (Sunday night) again and again, the body learns to anticipate and reproduce it. The nervous system is not registering "this feeling came and went"—it's registering a groove, a pattern etched deep enough that it feels unchangeable. The body's voice is saying this is real, permanent, structural.

Key insight

The difference between thinking a feeling is permanent and the body experiencing it as permanent are not the same thing—and the second one is what actually shapes behavior and belief.

If someone were to pause right before Sunday night feeling sets in—perhaps Saturday evening—what sensations appear in the body? Is the heaviness actually arriving Sunday, or is it being summoned ahead of time?

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

ACT notices that the repetition itself—Sunday nights returning again and again with the same feeling—has become the evidence that this state is unchangeable. But from this lens, the feeling returning is not the same as the feeling being permanent; what's actually permanent is the person's presence to each Sunday night, which creates an opportunity. ACT distinguishes between a feeling being frequent and a feeling being fixed. The fact that something happens every Sunday night doesn't make it immutable—it makes it predictable, which is actually useful information. The sense of permanence often comes from fused thinking ("this feeling = this is my life") rather than from the feeling's actual nature.

Key insight

The feeling's recurrence is what makes change possible, not impossible—each Sunday night is a new moment where something different could happen.
